TO: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp BODY: send http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/1236/servers.html --------------------------- Archie servers - (12 Aug) archie@archie.rutgers.edu archie@archie.funet.fi archie@archie.doc.ic.ac.uk archie@archie.th-darmstadt.de archie@archie.unl.edu (WORKS INTERMITTENTLY) archie@archie.univie.ac.at archie@archie.univ-rennes1.fr archie@archie.luth.se NOTE - You should get the help file from ALL servers that you use i.e. gopher, agora, ftp, bitftp, etc. by putting help in the body of a message. There may be differences that aren't readily apparent. ====================================================================== =2= FTP sites via gopher (Host sites updated 5 Dec) Host=gopher.UMontreal.CA Host=gopher.panam.edu Host=ras.ncc.go.jp Host=gopher.upol.cz EXAMPLE - I'll use this FTP site: ftp.cdrom.com Send a message to a gopher server, using one of the HOSTS above, with this in the body of the message: # Name=ftp.cdrom.com Type=1 Port=70 Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/ Host=****use one of the hosts from above**** This will be returned to you (parts snipped for brevity's sake): 35. ls-lR (36977k) [Sep 18 05:32]. 36. ls-lR.gz (5630k) [Sep 18 05:33]. 37. pub [Aug 24 17:12]/ 38. usr [Apr 3 02:23]/ 39. wcarchive.configuration (.0k) [Sep 18 05:00]. # Name=ls-lR (36977k) [Sep 18 05:32] Numb=35 Type=0 Port=70 Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/ls-lR Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu (whatever host you used will show here) # Name=ls-lR.gz (5630k) [Sep 18 05:33] Numb=36 Type=0 Port=70 Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/ls-lR.gz Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu # Name=pub [Aug 24 17:12] Numb=37 Type=1 Port=70 Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/pub/ Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu # Name=usr [Apr 3 02:23] Numb=38 Type=1 Port=70 Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/usr/ Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu # Name=wcarchive.configuration (.0k) [Sep 18 05:00] Numb=39 Type=0 Port=70 Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/wcarchive.configurationconfig@ Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu If you then wanted to get the pub and usr directory then send to the gopher server the portion from the return message that you desire. In this case, it's the pub and usr blocks. # Name=pub [Aug 24 17:12] Numb=37 Type=1 Port=70 Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/pub/ Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu # Name=usr [Apr 3 02:23] Numb=38 Type=1 Port=70 Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/usr/ Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu ------------------------------------------------------ NOTES: 1. You can remove the Numb= line as this is unnecessary. 2. If you send back a lot of these, put an identifying line in the Name= line. For instance, I add from which location I'm receiving the file. Example: Name=pub [Aug 24 17:12] (ftp.cdrom.com) Whatever you put in the Name= line will be in the subject of the returned message. 3. As you can see from above, the ftp site is placed in the Path= line with ftp: placed before it and @/ added after. 4. Gopher servers can be touchy. So if you are returned an empty message - TRY AGAIN. Use a different gopher server and/or send the message at a different time of day. 5. If there is a (.0k) next to the Name as in Numb=39 above, it means there's nothing there. 6. Some FTP sites may not be accessible. 7. If you know of other Hosts that perform this service, please email me so that I can include them in future updates. ====================================================================== =3= WWW binary files via gopher EXAMPLE - I'll use the following URL: http://www.benjerry.com/library/images/contest/fruit-hunt.gif Split=150K # Name=fruit-hunt.gif Type=9 Port=80 Path=GET /library/images/contest/fruit-hunt.gif Host=www.benjerry.com ------------------------------------------- NOTES: 1. The Split= command tells the gopher the maximum size of the messages it returns (default 27K per message). If it's a large binary file, set the Split= command for whatever your server will accept. 2. The above works with any binary file like .zip, .gif., .jpg, etc. ====================================================================== =4= USENET newsgroup FAQS via gopher and search engine Here's a way to get, via gopher, the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) in those newsgroups that have them. Send the following to any gopher server (see =1=) in the body of a message and substitute the newsgroup's name for the xxxxx.yyyyy.zzzzz # Name=xxxxx.yyyyy.zzzzz Type=1 Port=70 Path=ftp:rtfm.mit.edu@/pub/usenet-by-group/xxxxx.yyyyy.zzzzz/ Host=gopher.utoronto.ca ========EXAMPLE========= If you wanted the FAQ for alt.best.of.internet and the FAQ for rec.travel, you'd send: # Name=alt.best.of.internet Type=1 Port=70 Path=ftp:rtfm.mit.edu@/pub/usenet-by-group/alt.best.of.internet/ Host=gopher.utoronto.ca # Name=rec.travel Type=1 Port=70 Path=ftp:rtfm.mit.edu@/pub/usenet-by-group/rec.travel/ Host=gopher.utoronto.ca NOTE: You can retrieve up to 100 FAQS with one message. Each FAQ will be returned in a separate message to you with a subject that is in the Name= block. Don't forget the / at the end of the Path= line. ------------------------- If you want to find out which newsgroups have FAQS, then send this message to a gopher server: # Name=USENET FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) by Newsgroup Type=1 Port=70 Path=ftp:rtfm.mit.edu@/pub/usenet-by-group/ Host=gopher.utoronto.ca NOTE: Be forewarned that you will get 17 messages in return each being 823 lines long or 27K bytes per message unless you specify a Split= command that is larger. ------------------------- Here's how to search newsgroup FAQS for a key word. Substitute the word for XXX below. The * means it will search for the word specified and any other words containing it. (28 Dec) TO: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp BODY: send http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/htbin/search-usenet-fa\ qs/form?find=XXX* Example: To search newsgroup FAQs for the word 'graphic', I would send this: send http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/htbin/search-usenet-fa\ qs/form?find=graphic* This would return newsgroups that had graphic, graphics, graphical, geographic, photographic, etc. in their description NOTE: The backslash at the end of a line tells the Agora server that the URL continues on the next line. ====================================================================== =5= USENET newsgroups via gopher - 12 Dec Accessing USENET newsgroups via gopher (3 sections) Send these 3 blocks in the body of a message to a gopher server: # Name=USENET News (University of Canberra, Australia) Type=1 Port=4320 Path=nntp Host=services.canberra.edu.au # Name=USENET News (University of Heidelberg) Type=1 Port=4323 Path=nntp Host=gopher.urz.uni-heidelberg.de # Name=USENET news - UP Olomouc Type=1 Port=4320 Path=nntp Host=risc.upol.cz ------------------------------------------------------------ This one returns the names in Spanish but the newsgroups are in English. # Name=USENET NEWS (from Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, Spain) Type=1 Port=70 Path=.news/ Host=mirzam.ccc.upv.es Here's the translation you'll need. 1 - their local list 2 - their entire list of newsgroups with corresponding blocks. 3 - just a listing of every newgroup they carry 4 - keyword search 5 - the entire list of newsgroups from src.doc.ic.ac.uk If you want to cut to the chase, here's #3 and #5 from the above. # Name=Consulta jerarquica de totes les "News" Numb=2 Type=1 Port=70 Path=exec:-G:/bin/gonnrp Host=mirzam.ccc.upv.es # Name=Consulta jerarquica de totes les "News" Numb=5 Type=1 Port=70 Path=1/usenet/news-info Host=src.doc.ic.ac.uk ------------------------------------------ And last on the list, send a message to a gopher server with this as the subj: sunsite.doc.ic.ac.uk ------------------------------------------- Once you've retrieved all of the listings that you desire and want to get the messages from a particular newsgroup, here's a sample using as an example the newsgroup comp.mail.misc and a host from above. Send a message with the following body to a gopher mentioned in =1= with a SUBJ: get all # Type=1 Port=4320 Path=nntp ls comp.mail.misc Host=risc.upol.cz ----------------------------------------- NOTES: 1. In the above, the two from doc.ic.ac.uk might grab from the same bag but it's always nice to have alternatives. 2. If you find other gopher news servers, please email me so that I can include them in future updates. 3. These gopher servers for news come and go. Sometimes they're busy, sometimes they return blank messages, and sometimes they just go belly up. ---------------------------------------- Using agora servers (see =1= above), you can use these commands: send news:comp.mail.misc deep news:comp.mail.misc The first command above will get you the current headers/subject lines posted to comp.mail.misc that are carried by that particular agora server. The second command gets you all of the messages referred to above. All agora servers do NOT carry the same newsgroups nor do they carry all newsgroups. ====================================================================== =6= WWW - NS Lookup Gateway Here are some simple WWW - NS Lookup Gateways. You can enter either the host name or IP address and it will return the other. Examples: send http://www.sanet.sk/~milan/cgi-bin/look?query=www.disney.com will return the IP addresses for www.disney.com. send http://www.csu.net/cgi-bin/nslookup?203.5.119.1 will return the host name, which happens to be trumpet.com.au Just substitute either the host name or IP address for XXX and send any of them in the body of a message to: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp send http://www.rlg.org/cgi-bin/ip2ariadr.pl?addr=XXX send http://www.sanet.sk/~milan/cgi-bin/look?query=XXX send http://ebisu.ec.nagasaki-u.ac.jp/cgi/nslookup.cgi?XXX send http://gday.bloke.com/cgi-bin/nslookup?XXX send http://www.csu.net/cgi-bin/nslookup?XXX send http://www.dinet.de/cgi-bin/nslookup?XXX send http://www.inetw.net/cgi-bin/nslookup.cgi?XXX send http://www.nih.go.jp/~jun/cgi-bin/nslookup?XXX send http://www.nobis.com/cgi-bin/nslookup.cgi?XXX send http://www.virtual.net.au/cgi-bin/nslookup?XXX send http://www.hood.edu/cgi-bin/nslookup.sh.cgi?XXX send http://www.wpi.edu/cgi-bin/nslookup?XXX NOTE - If you're looking up a domain from an IP address: Some IP addresses do not have a record in the Domain Name System that matches them to a domain, even though there is a record associating a domain with that IP address. For instance, when you get the IP addresses for www.disney.com and send a query on those addresses, you get back a "domain not found" message. ----------------- Try some other lookup services. send http://www.switch.ch/cgi-bin/info/whois?Que\ ry=XXX&Server=whois.internic.net send http://www.switch.ch/cgi-bin/info/whois?Que\ ry=XXX&Server=whois.ripe.net NOTE: The backslash at the end of a line tells the Agora server that the URL continues on the next line. --------------------------------- There are more whois servers that you can try; get the list at: ftp://sipb.mit.edu/pub/whois/whois-servers.list ====================================================================== =7= Gerry Boyd's search engines ready to go - 5 Aug Substitute your words for the x's, y's, and z's in the examples below. • Re: Isn't it a lovely day and should I take a coat!!!!!!! Fred
  • pub/linux -rw-rw-r-- 1 root sics 65430 Nov 3 1994 SICS tel & email 1st line - the first character denotes a 'd' directory 2nd line - the first character denotes a 'l' link 3rd line - the first character denotes a '-' file (binary or text) The 'l' is a shortcut to that directory. You can enter the linux directory from the root directory or change to the pub directory and enter from there, ie cd linux -OR- cd pub/linux Now let's look at characters 8, 9 and 10, which show: r - read permission w - write permission x - execute permission A minus sign '-' means that you do not have that permission. What you need to be concerned with is 'r-x' as a minimum for directories and 'r--' as a minimum for files. If you try to change to a directory or retrieve a file and access is denied or nothing is returned, check characters 8-10 for the proper permissions (see NOTE). Scoot over and look at the date. If a time is shown (20:33 from the 1st line) in place of the year, it means that it was modified within 1 year of the date you retrieved the directory. To the left of the date is the file size - so the 3rd line has a file size of 65430 bytes or 65KB. Don't bother about this number for directories or links. The last entry on the line is the name of either the directory or file. When you change to a directory or retrieve a file CASE IS IMPORTANT. The best way is to copy and paste. Look at the 3rd line and yes the name of the file is: SICS tel & email so to retrieve it write: get SICS tel & email There are many strange looking file names and it is important to enter them EXACTLY as shown, which is why copy and paste is most effective. With that said, take a look at the next 2 lines - are they the same? get abc.zip get abc.zip To you they look the same but to a robot, they are not. Place your cursor at the end of the 2nd line or press 'end' on your PC. You'll see that the 2nd line has 2 extra spaces after abc.zip. The robot reads this as abc.zip(space)(space), which won't get you the file. Moral - check to make sure no extra spaces are at the end of a line. NOTE: Some root directories are not accessible but other sub directories under them are. This means that sending this command may return nothing for the root dir but will return the pub directory. open ftp.xxx.yyy.com dir cd pub dir quit ====================================================================== =12= URL Reminder Service (Advanced Service added) This service will send you an email message each time a URL, that you specify, changes its contents. UUENCODE it. Then, using a text editor, delete the lines at the end of the message beginning with the line with just a ' on it and all of the following lines. The line after ' should say "end" and lines after that should say "sum" etc. 2nd - Still using your text editor, insert or paste at the end of this uuencoded file the rest of the uuencoded parts. 3rd - Save the file as whatever.uu and uudecode the entire file. You then will have a workable ZIP, EXE, etc. file. Example - you receive a message that states that part 001 of 004 of TEST.ZIP is attached. You then get 3 other messages that are uuencoded Parts 002, 003, 004 of the same TEST.ZIP. Download everything and first take TEST.ZIP and uuencode it. Then, using a text editor, delete all the lines at the end starting with the line that has just a ' on it. Next paste in part 002, followed by part 003 and then part 004. Make sure that you remove any headers from parts 002, 003, 004 so that every line of code begins with a capital M. Next save the text as a text file and uudecode it. The resulting file should be the file that you ordered from your FTP server. ---------------------- When you send for a URL binary file via an Agora server, it's returned uuencoded. When you uudecode it, it's uudecoded and saved as wwwmail_bin OR it won't uudecode. If it's saved as wwwmail_bin, rename the file to the file that you requested. So if you requested abc.zip then rename the wwwmail_bin file to abc.zip or if you requested fghi.gif then rename it to fghi.gif. If it won't uudecode, then you might want to try some of the uudecoders mentioned in section =12= of 'email4u'. I've had no problems when using udec1_1.zip. ====================================================================== =16= Search for information on specific computer viruses Symantec's virus database can be searched by substituting a lower case letter for the ? http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index/index_?.html For viruses beginning with a number use this URL: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index/index_0-9.html Datafellows maintains a virus database which can be searched using: http://www.datafellows.com/v-descs/?.htm Substitute for ? above, the first letter of the virus, using lower case, or a number, if the virus starts with a number. It shows most of the derivatives of the word as well. Put the word you want translated in the subject and the body. TO: translate@leo.org BODY: see above ------------------------ TO: transnow@gnk-nte.globalink.com SUBJ: enter a letter that corresponds to the source language, followed by a comma and then a letter for the target language. Use the key below to determine which letters to use. E - English F - French S - Spanish G - German I - Italian For example, if you wish to translate from English to Spanish, the subject line should read: SUBJECT: [you type the following] E, S NOTE: You must translate from or to English. For example, you can't translate from German to Italian. BODY: Cut the template below and paste it in to your mail. FNAME = LNAME = E-MAIL = ADD1 = ADD2 = CITY = STATE = COUNTRY = ZIP = PHONE = FAX = TEXT = Fill in the fields. All fields are optional except "E-MAIL" and of course "TEXT" (your text to be translated), which must be provided. After the "TEXT" field enter the text you want to translate. Maximum length of text field is 1500 characters; all other fields 50. You should receive e-mail from Globalink with the translated text in about 24 hours. This service DOES NOT WORK much of the time. IMPORTANT NOTE: For optimal translations, your source text should consist of concise, simply constructed sentences, free of ambiguities and idiomatic expressions. For that reason, basic business style works significantly better than complex sentences, or metaphorical, colloquial style. Also, when sending a machine translated draft to someone, it is usually helpful to send a copy of the original source text as well so that the reader can refer to it for additional help in understanding the translation. The machine translations provided by this complimentary service are designed to provide only the general meaning of the translated text. Occasional awkward syntax, inexact phrases, and grammatical errors must be expected. ----------------------------------- And for those of you who want your own multilingual translating dictionary, go here.
